JESUS THE CHRIST

Matthew 5:17-48
Luke 6:27-36
Thomas 95

"Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets;
I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
For amen, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not one 'i' nor one dot shall pass away from the law
until everything is accomplished.

"Therefore whoever breaks one of the smallest
of these commandments and teaches people thus,
will be called smallest in the sovereignty of heaven.
But whoever performs and teaches,
this one will be called great in the sovereignty of heaven.
For I tell you that unless your justice
surpasses that of the scholars and Pharisees,
you will not enter into the sovereignty of heaven.

"You heard that it was said to the ancients,
'You shall not murder;
and whoever murders will be liable to the judgment.'
But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother
will be liable to the judgment;
and whoever says to his brother, 'Numskull,'
will be liable to the council;
and whoever says, 'Fool,'
will be liable to the hell of fire.

"Therefore if you are offering your gift at the altar
and there remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your gift there before the altar,
and go first be reconciled to your brother,
and then come offer your gift.

"Be agreeable to your opponent quickly
while you are with him on the way;
lest the opponent give you over to the judge
and the judge to the attendant, and you be thrown into prison;
amen, I tell you, you will not come out from there
until you pay back the last penny.

"You heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'
But I tell you that everyone who looks at a woman with desire
already has committed adultery with her in his heart.

"And if your right eye offends you,
take it out and throw it away from you;
for it is better for you to lose one of your parts
and not let your whole body be thrown into hell.

"And if your right hand offends you,
cut it off and throw it away from you;
for it is better for you to lose one of your parts
and not let your whole body go away into hell.

"And it was said, 'Whoever separates from his wife
must give her a divorce.'
But I tell you that everyone separating from his wife,
except for reason of fornication, makes her commit adultery,
and whoever marries one separated, commits adultery.

"Again you heard that it was said to the ancients,
'You shall not break your oath,
but keep your oaths to the Lord.'
But I tell you not to swear at all:
neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet;
nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king;
nor swear by your head,
for you cannot make one hair white or black.
And let your word be 'Yes yes, no no;'
but more than these is from evil.

"You heard that it was said,
'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
But I tell you not to resist evil;
but whoever strikes you on your right cheek,
turn to him the other also;
and to the one who intends to judge you and take your shirt,
leave him also the coat;
and whoever forces you one mile, go with him two.

"Give to the one who asks you,
and do not turn away from the one
who wishes to borrow from you.

"You heard that it was said,
'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
But I tell you: love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may become sons of your Father in heaven,
for his sun rises on the bad and good
and it rains on the just and unjust.

"For if you love those who love you,
what reward do you have?
Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet only your brothers,
are you doing anything extra?
Do not even the nationalities do the same?
Therefore be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect."
Matthew 5:17-48

"But I tell you who hear: love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you,
bless those cursing you, pray for those abusing you.
To the one hitting you on the cheek offer also the other,
and from the one taking your coat
do not keep back the shirt also.

"Give to everyone asking,
and do not demand your things back from the one taking them.
And what you would like people to do to you,
do likewise to them.

"And if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
For even the sinners love those who love them.
For even if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you?
Even the sinners do the same.

"And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive,
what credit is that to you?
Even the sinners lend to sinners
so that they may receive back an equal amount.
But love your enemies and do good
and lend expecting nothing;
and your reward will be large,
and you will be sons of the highest,
for he is kind to the ungrateful and bad.
Become compassionate, as your Father is compassionate."
Luke 6:27-36

Jesus said, "If you have money, do not lend at interest,
but give to him from whom you will not receive."
Thomas 95
