Thomas 36

"Be careful not to do your rightness
before people to be seen by them;
otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

"Therefore when you perform charity,
do not trumpet it before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogue and in the streets,
so that they may be praised by people;
amen, I tell you, they receive their reward.

"But performing your charity
let not your left know what your right does,
so that your charity may be in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will give back to you."
Matthew 6:1-4

Jesus said, "I tell my mysteries to those
who are worthy of my mysteries.
What your right will do, let not your left know what it does."
Thomas 62

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites;
for they love to pray in the synagogues
and standing on the street corners,
so that they may be visible to people;
amen, I tell you, they receive their reward.

"But when you pray,
go into your room and having closed your door
pray to your Father in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will give back to you.

"And in praying do not babble like the nationalities;
for they think that in their many words they will be heard.
Therefore do not be like them;
for your Father knows what needs you have before you ask him.

"Therefore pray you thus:
Our Father in heaven:
holy be your name;
may your sovereignty come;
may your will be done,
as in heaven also on earth.
Give us today our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgave also our debtors;
and do not bring us into temptation,
but rescue us from the evil.

"For if you forgive people their transgressions,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
but if you do not forgive people,
neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.

"And when you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites;
for they disfigure their faces
so they may show to people they are fasting;
amen, I tell you, they receive their reward.
But when you are fasting,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so you may not show to people you are fasting
but to your Father in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will give back to you."
Matthew 6:5-18

His disciples asked him and said to him,
"Do you want us to fast?
and how should we pray and perform charity?
and what diet should we observe?"

Jesus said, "Do not lie; and do not do what you hate;
for all things are manifest before heaven.
For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed,
and there is nothing covered
that will remain without being uncovered."
Thomas 6

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth,
where moth and eating destroy,
and where thieves break through and steal;
but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor eating destroy,
and where thieves do not break through nor steal;
for where your treasure is, there also will be your heart.

"The eye is the lamp of the body.
Therefore if your eye is clear,
your whole body will be illuminated;
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be dark.
Therefore if the light in you is darkness,
how great the darkness!

"No one can serve two lords;
for either he will hate the one and love the other,
or he will hold to one and disregard the other.
You cannot serve God and money.

"For this reason I tell you:
do not be anxious about your life---
what you should eat or what you should drink,
nor for your body---what you should wear.
Is not life more than food
and the body more than clothes?
Look at the birds of heaven,
for they do not sow nor reap nor gather into barns,
and your heavenly Father feeds them;
are you not worth more than they?
Who among you by being anxious
can add one hour to his life?

"And why be anxious about clothing?
Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow:
they do not labor nor spin;
yet I tell you that Solomon in all his splendor
was not dressed like one of these.
But if God so clothes the grass of the field
which exists today and tomorrow is thrown into an oven,
will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?

"Therefore do not be anxious saying, 'What should we eat?'
or 'What should we drink?' or 'What should we wear?'
For the nations strive for all these things;
and your heavenly Father knows that you need all of them.

"But seek first the sovereignty and his justice,
and all these things will be provided for you.
Therefore be not anxious about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will be anxious for itself;
each day has enough trouble of its own."
Matthew 6:19-34

"The lamp of the body is your eye.
When your eye is clear, your whole body is also illuminated;
but when it is bad, your body is also darkened.
Watch therefore lest the light in you be dark.
Therefore if your whole body is illuminated,
not having any part darkened,
it will be completely illuminated
as when the lamp by gleaming lights you."
Luke 11:34-36

And he said to his disciples, "For this reason I tell you,
do not worry about your life, what you should eat,
nor about your body, what you should wear.
For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.

"Observe the crows, for they neither sow nor reap,
have neither storehouse nor barn, and God feeds them;
how much greater are you than birds!

"And which of you by worrying
can add a cubit to one's lifespan?
If then you cannot do the smallest thing,
why worry about the rest?

"Observe the lilies, how they neither spin nor weave;
but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor
was dressed like one of these.
And if God so clothes the grass in a field which exists today
and tomorrow is thrown into an oven,
how much more will he clothe you, you of little faith!

"And do not search for what you should eat
and what you should drink, and do not be anxious;
for the nations of the world strive for all these things;
but your Father knows that you need them;
rather search for his sovereignty,
and these things will be provided for you.
Luke 12:22-31

Jesus said, "Have no care from morning until evening
and from evening until morning for what you will wear."
Thomas 36
