THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Synthesis
29

"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites;
for they love to pray in the synagogues
and standing on the street corners,
so that they may be visible to people;
amen, I tell you, they received their reward.

"But when you pray,
go into your room and having closed your door
pray to your Father in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will give back to you.

"And in praying do not babble like the nationalities;
for they think that in their many words they will be heard.
Therefore do not be like them;
for your Father knows what needs you have
before you ask him.

"Therefore pray you thus:
Our Father in heaven;
holy be your name;
may your sovereignty come;
may your will be done,
as in heaven also on earth.
Give us today our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgave also our debtors;
and do not bring us into temptation,
but rescue us from the evil.

"For if you forgive people their transgressions,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
but if you do not forgive people,
neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.

"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites;
for they disfigure their faces
so they may show to people they are fasting;
amen, I tell you, they received their reward.

"But when you are fasting,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so you may not show to people you are fasting
but to your Father in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will give back to you.

"Be careful not to do your rightness before people
to be seen by them;
otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

"Therefore when you perform charity,
do not trumpet it before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets,
so that they may be praised by people;
amen, I tell you, they received their reward.

"But performing your charity
let not your left know what your right does,
so that your charity may be in secret;
and your Father who sees in secret will give back to you.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth,
where moth and eating destroy,
and where thieves break in and steal;
but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor eating destroy,
and where thieves do not break in nor steal;
for where your treasure is, there also will be your heart.

"The eye is the lamp of the body.
Therefore if your eye is clear,
your whole body is also illuminated;
but if your eye is bad,
your whole body is also dark.
Therefore if the light in you is dark,
how great the darkness!
Watch therefore lest the light in you be dark.
But if your whole body is illuminated,
not having any part dark,
it will be completely illuminated
as when the lamp by gleaming lights you.

"No one can serve two lords;
for either one will hate the one and love the other,
or one will hold to one and disregard the other.
You cannot serve God and money.

"For this reason I tell you:
do not worry about your life---
what you should eat or what you should drink,
nor about your body---what you should wear.
Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes?
Look at the birds of heaven,
for they do not sow nor reap nor gather into barns,
and your heavenly Father feeds them;
are you not worth more than they?
Who among you by worrying can add one hour to his life?
If then you cannot do the smallest thing,
why worry about the rest?

"And why worry about clothing?
Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow:
they do not labor nor spin;
yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor
was dressed like one of these.
But if God so clothes the grass of the field
which exists today and tomorrow is thrown into an oven,
will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?

"Therefore do not be anxious saying,
'What should we eat?'
or 'What should we drink?'
or 'What should we wear?'
For the nations of the world strive for all these things;
and your heavenly Father knows that you need all of them.

"But seek first the sovereignty and his justice,
and all these things will be provided for you.
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will be anxious for itself;
each day has enough trouble of its own.
