THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Synthesis
8

Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judea
in the days of King Herod,
look, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
saying, "Where is the one born king of the Jews?
For we saw his star in the east and came to worship him."

King Herod having heard was disturbed,
and all Jerusalem with him,
and assembling all the high priests
and scholars of the people
he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea;
for thus has it been written through the prophet:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the governors of Judah.
For from you will come a governor,
who will shepherd my people Israel."

Then Herod secretly calling the magi
ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance,
and sending them to Bethlehem he said,
"Go examine carefully about the child;
and when you find him, report back to me,
so that I too may come worship him."

Having heard the king they set out;
and look, the star, which they had seen in the east,
went ahead of them
until it came to stand above where the child was.
Seeing the star they rejoiced with extremely great joy.

Coming into the house
they saw the child with Mary, his mother,
and falling down they worshipped him;
opening their treasures they offered him gifts,
gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they withdrew by another way into their country.

When they had withdrawn,
look, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph,
saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother,
and flee to Egypt, and be there until I tell you;
for Herod intends to search for the child to destroy it."

Getting up he took the child and his mother by night
and withdrew into Egypt,
and he was there until the death of Herod
so that what was spoken by the Lord
through the prophet might be fulfilled:

Out of Egypt have I called my son.

Then Herod, seeing that he was tricked by the magi,
became very angry,
and sending out he annihilated all the little boys
in Bethlehem and all its regions
from two years and under, according to the time
which he had ascertained from the magi.

Then was fulfilled what was spoken
through the prophet Jeremiah:

A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and lamenting much;
Rachel wept for her children
and would not be comforted,
for they are not.

But Herod having died,
look, an angel of the Lord
appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother,
and travel into the land of Israel,
for those who sought the child's life have died."

Getting up he took the child and his mother
and entered the land of Israel.
But hearing that Archelaus was king of Judea
instead of his father Herod,
he was afraid to go there;
and having been warned in a dream
he withdrew into parts of Galilee,
and he lived in a town called Nazareth;
so it was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophets:

He shall be called a Nazarene.
