John 16:1-33

"I have spoken these things to you
so that you may not fall away.
They will make you excommunicated;
but the hour is coming when everyone who kills you
may think he is offering a service to God.
And they will do these things
because they do not know the Father or me.
But I have spoken these things to you so that
when their hour comes you may remember them,
what I told you.

"I did not tell you these things from the beginning,
because I was with you.
But now I am going to the one who sent me,
and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But because I have spoken these things to you,
grief has filled your heart.

"But I tell you the truth,
it is to your advantage that I should go away.
For unless I go away,
the intermediary may not come to you;
but if I go, I will send it to you.
And that one coming will correct the world
concerning sin and justice and judgment;
concerning sin, because they did not believe in me;
and concerning justice, because I am going to the Father
and you will see me no more;
and concerning judgment,
because the ruler of this world has been judged.

"I still have many things to tell you,
but you cannot bear them now;
but when that one comes, the spirit of truth,
it will guide you into all truth;
for it will not speak from itself,
but whatever it hears it will speak,
and it will report to you what is coming.
That one will glorify me,
because it will receive from me and report to you.
Everything which the Father has is mine;
for this reason I said that it receives from me
and will report to you.
A little while and you will no longer see me,
and a little while again and you will see me."

So some of his disciples said to each other,
"What is this he tells us:
'A little while and you will not see me,
and a little while again and you will see me'?
and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"

So they said, "What is this he says, 'A little while'?
We don't understand what he is saying."

Jesus knew that they wished to ask him,
and he said to them, "Concerning this
are you searching with each other because I said,
'A little while and you will not see me,
and a little while again and you will see me'?
Amen, amen, I tell you that you will weep and mourn,
and the world will rejoice;
you will be grieved, but your grief will turn into joy.

"The woman when she gives birth has grief,
because her hour has come;
but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the pain
because of the joy that a person was born into the world.

"And you therefore now have grief;
but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice,
and no one can take your joy away from you.

"And on that day you will not ask me anything.
Amen, amen, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father for
he will give you in my name.
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name;
ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be filled.
I have spoken these things to you in allegories;
an hour is coming
when I will no longer speak to you in allegories,
but I will announce to you openly about the Father.

"On that day you will ask in my name,
and I am not saying that I will ask the Father about you;
for the Father himself loves you,
because you have loved me
and have believed that I came from God.
I came out of the Father and have come into the world;
again I am leaving the world and going to the Father."

His disciples say, "Look, now you are speaking openly,
and you are telling no allegory.
Now we understand that you know everything
and you have no need for anyone to question you;
by this we believe that you came from God."

Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?
Look, an hour is coming and has come
when you will be scattered each to his own things
and you will leave me alone;
yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
I have spoken these things to you
so that in me you may have peace.
In the world you have affliction;
but courage! I have overcome the world."
