THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Synthesis
93

Then soldiers of the governor
took Jesus into the praetorium,
and calling together the whole cohort
they gathered around him.
Having dressed him in purple with the thorn crown on him,
they put a reed in his right hand,
and kneeling they worshipped him
and began to salute him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"
Spitting on him they took the reed and beat his head.

When they had mocked him,
they took the purple off him and dressed him in his clothes,
and they led him away to crucify him.

They enlisted passing by Simon, a Cyrenian,
coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Grabbing him they put the cross on him
to carry it behind Jesus.
A large number of the people followed him
and women who mourned and lamented him.

Turning to them Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem,
do not weep for me;
but weep for yourselves and for your children,
for days come on which they will say,
'Blessed are the barren,
and the wombs that have not borne,
and breasts that have not nursed!'
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us,'
and to the hills, 'Cover us;'
for if they do these things when the wood is green,
what will happen when it is dry?"

Also two different criminals were led with him
to be executed.

They brought him to a place called Golgotha,
which translated means the place of the skull.
They gave him myrrh-flavored wine mixed with gall to drink,
but tasting it he would not drink it.

There they crucified him and with him the two robbers,
one on his right and one on his left,
and in the middle Jesus.

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them;
for they do not know what they are doing."

It was the third hour when they crucified him.
Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross,
and the inscription of the charge
written above his head was:
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Therefore many of the Jews read this title,
for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city;
and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

Therefore the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate,
"Do not write, 'The king of the Jews,'
but that that one said, 'I am king of the Jews.'"

Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

The soldiers, when they crucified Jesus,
took his clothes and made four parts,
to each soldier a part, and the tunic.
But the tunic was seamless, woven from the top throughout.

So they said to each other, "Let us not split it,
but decide about it by lot whose it shall be;"
that the scripture might be fulfilled:

They divided my clothes themselves
and over my robe they threw lots.

The soldiers did these things,
and sitting they kept watch over him there.
The people stood watching,
and those passing by reviled him shaking their heads
and saying, "Ah, the one tearing down the temple
and building it in three days!
Save yourself, if you are the son of God,
and come down from the cross."

Likewise also the high priests
mocking with the scholars and elders
said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself;
let the Christ, the king of Israel,
come down now from the cross,
so that we may see and believe in him.
He has trusted in God;
let him rescue him now if he wants him;
for he said, 'I am God's son.'"

The soldiers approaching also mocked him saying,
"If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."

One of the criminals crucified with him also insulted him
and reviled him, "Are you not the Christ?
Save yourself and us."

But the other answering
reproached him, "Do you not fear God,
for you are under the same verdict?
And we justly, for we did things deserving
of what we are receiving back;
but this one did nothing out of place.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

He said to him, "Amen, I tell you,
today you will be with me in paradise."

There stood by the cross of Jesus his mother
and his mother's sister, Mary, wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene.

So Jesus seeing his mother
and the disciple standing by whom he loved,
he said to his mother, "Woman, look, your son."

Then he said to the disciple, "Look, your mother."
From that hour the disciple took her into his home.
