THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Synthesis
51

On the last day of the feast, the great day,
Jesus stood and cried out saying,
"If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me;
and I myself will become he,
and the secrets will be revealed to him.
Whoever believes in me, as the scripture said,
rivers of living water will flow from him."

But this he said about the Spirit
which the ones believing in him were going to receive;
for it was not the Spirit yet,
because Jesus was not yet glorified.

So some of the crowd hearing these words
said, "This is truly the prophet;"
others said, "This is the Christ;"
but others said, "No,
for does the Christ come from Galilee?
Doesn't the scripture say
that the Christ comes from the seed of David,
and from Bethlehem the village where David was?"

Thus a division occurred among the crowd because of him;
and some of them wished to arrest him,
but no one laid a hand on him.

So the attendants went to the high priests and Pharisees,
and those said to them, "Why did you not bring him in?"

The attendants answered,
"A person never spoke thus, as this person speaks."

So the Pharisees answered them,
"Have you been misled too?
Did any of the rulers or Pharisees believe in him?
But this crowd, not knowing the law, is cursed."

Nicodemus, the first one of them to come to him,
said to them, "Does your law judge a person
unless it first hears from him and knows what he does?"

They answered him, "Aren't you from Galilee too?
Investigate and you will see
that a prophet is not raised from Galilee."

They each went into his house,
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

At dawn he appeared again in the temple;
all the people came to him, and sitting he taught them.

The scholars and the Pharisees
brought a woman caught in adultery,
and standing her in the middle they said to him, "Teacher,
this woman has been caught in the act of adultery;
and in the law Moses ordered us to stone such a woman;
therefore what do you say?"
They said this tempting him,
so that they might have something to accuse him of.

But Jesus bending down
wrote down with his finger on the ground.
As they kept asking him,
he straightened up and said to them,
"Let whoever among you who is without sin
throw the first stone at her."

Again bending down he wrote on the ground.
Having heard they went out one by one
beginning with the elders;
he was left alone, and the woman was in the middle.

Straightening up Jesus said to her,
"Woman, where are they?
Did no one condemn you?"

She said, "No one, lord."

Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you;
go, from now on sin no more."
