THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Synthesis
38

Jesus seeing the crowd around him
gave orders to go away to the other side.
A scholar said to him, "Teacher,
I will follow you wherever you go."

Jesus said to him,
"The foxes have holes and the birds of heaven nests,
but the human son has no place
where he may lay his head and rest."

He said to another, "Follow me."

But he said, "Lord, permit me first
to go away and bury my father."

But Jesus said to him,
"Let the dead bury the dead themselves,
but you go announce the sovereignty of God."

Another also said, "I will follow you, Lord;
but first permit me to say goodby to the ones in my home."

But Jesus said to him,
"No one putting his hand on the plow
and looking at the things behind
is fit for the sovereignty of God."

He said to them on that day as evening came,
"Let us go over to the other side."
Leaving the crowd they took him along,
as he was in the boat.
They put out; and as they sailed he fell asleep.
A whirlwind came down onto the lake,
and the waves broke into the boat,
so that now the boat was being filled up
and they were in danger.
He was in the stern sleeping on a pillow.

Approaching they woke him up saying, "Lord, save us!
Don't you care that we are perishing?"

Waking up he reprimanded the wind
and said to the sea, "Be quiet! Shut up!"
The wind ceased, and it became very calm.

He said to them, "Why are you such cowards?
How come you have no faith?"

They were afraid with great awe and marveled,
saying to each other, "Who then is this,
that he commands even the wind and the sea,
and they obey him?"

They came to the other side of the sea
to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.
As he was coming out of the boat,
a man from the tombs having demons met him,
and for a considerable time he had not worn clothes;
he did not stay in a house but among the tombs.
No one could bind him with a chain anymore,
for he had often been bound with shackles and chains,
and the chains and shackles had been broken
and torn apart by him,
and no one was strong enough to control him;
through all the night and day
among the tombs and in the mountains
he was crying out and cutting himself with stones;
he was extremely violent,
so that no one could pass through that way.

Seeing Jesus from a distance he ran and fell before him,
and crying out with a loud voice he said,
"What are you to me, Jesus son of God the highest?
I implore you by God, do not torture me!"

For he had said to him,
"Come out unclean spirit from this person."

Then Jesus questioned him, "What is your name?"

He said to him, "My name is Legion, for we are many."

They begged him much
that he should not send them outside the country.
There near the mountain was a large herd of pigs feeding;
the demons begged him, "If you expel us,
send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them."

He permitted them to do so, saying, "Go."
Coming out from the person the demons entered into the pigs,
and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the sea,
about two thousand of them; and they were drowned.
The ones feeding them fled
and reported in the city and in the country,
and they came out to see what happened.

They came to Jesus
and saw the demoniac sitting clothed and sensible,
the one who had had the legion, and they were afraid.
Those who saw related to them how the demoniac was healed.
All the population of the Gerasene neighborhood
began to beg him to go away from their region,
because they were distressed with great fear.

As he embarked in the boat,
the man from whom the demons had gone out
asked to be with him, but he sent him away
saying, "Return to your home to your people,
and report to them
what the Lord has done for you and the mercy shown you."
So he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis
what Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
