THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Synthesis
25

In that season on a Sabbath
Jesus was passing through the grain fields;
his disciples were hungry
and began to make a path picking the wheat,
and rubbing it in their hands they ate the wheat.

Some of the Pharisees seeing said to him,
"Look, your disciples are doing
what is not permitted on a Sabbath."

Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did,
when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him?
how he entered into the house of God
in Abiathar's high-priesthood
and taking the consecrated bread ate it
and gave it to those with him,
which only the priests are permitted to eat?

"Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath
the priests in the temple desecrate the Sabbath
and are blameless?

"I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.
If you had known what is 'I wish mercy and not sacrifice,'
you would not have condemned the blameless.
The Sabbath was made because of the human,
and not the human because of the Sabbath;
so the human son is also Lord of the Sabbath."

On another Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
A person was there who had a withered hand,
and the scholars and the Pharisees watched him
to see if he would heal on the Sabbath,
so that they might find something to accuse him of.

But he knew their reasoning
and said to the person with the withered hand,
"Rise and stand in the middle;" and he stood up.

Jesus said to them,
"I ask you if it is permitted on the Sabbath
to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy?"

But they were silent.

He said to them, "What person is there among you
who has one sheep, if it falls into a ditch on the Sabbath,
will not seize it and lift it out?
By how much, then, does a person differ from a sheep!
So it is permitted to do good on the Sabbath."

Then looking around at them with anger,
grieved at the hardness of their hearts,
he said to the person, "Hold out your hand."

He held it out,
and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.
The Pharisees were filled with fury,
and going out they plotted with the Herodians against him,
how they might destroy him.
