THE GOOD MESSAGE OF
JESUS THE CHRIST
Interpretation

48. Jesus Predicts Death and Pays Tax.

For future reference Jesus told his disciples that he would be given over to people, killed, and rise up again. They did not understand him; but he knew that they would realize what he meant after it occurred. Thus his prediction would strengthen their faith that this was all according to plan.

“In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes,” wrote Benjamin Franklin, and Jesus faced both with equal calmness. Jesus opposed paying tax to the Romans, but this two-drachma tax was for the temple in Jerusalem. Thus he found a way for Peter and him to pay it. Jesus demonstrated his clairvoyance and also his ability to acquire money in a symbolically significant way.
